With today's sad news that David Beckham may not be able to play in the World Cup after tearing his Achilles Tendon it's brought to the front of my mind how crucial it is to ensure that you're looking after your Achilles Tendon and caring for it when its injured!

Ok, so we're not all World class footballers like David Beckham with the country depending on our fitness... but making sure you care for your Achilles Tendon problems is vital to ensure maximum mobility and a pain free life!

Research has shown that to prevent and alleviate problems with the Achilles Tendon you must:

Temporarily cease the activity that causes the pain.
Apply a cold compress for around 20 minutes when ever rest is resumed.
Select footwear with a proper arch support that reduces pronation, has a firm heel counter, wide toe box, rigid shank, removable innersole and a long vamp.
Stretch and massage the calf muscle before and after exercise.
Begin exercise slowly, especially if you’re new to it.

As they are the new fitness shoes that promise to shape your body while you walk. The new Skechers Shape Ups Trainers have generated lots of talk and lots of Shape Ups reviews. Now, these are hefty claims and understandably there have been some cynics. With the conversations still raging I thought that it was high time I review Skechers Shape Ups myself!

Before embarking on my own Shape up review I read many Skechers reviews and the clinical evidence sounded very impressive, claims stated that that if you wear Skechers Shape Ups for 6 weeks you will:

Lose on average 3.25 Pounds

Reduce Body Fat by an average of 1.125%

Increase buttock strength by an average of 41%

Increase lower back endurance by an average of 37%

With scientific studies to back up these claims Skechers Shape Ups are very promising indeed!

The first thing that attracted me to the Shape Ups was their price, at £79 for trainers and £139 for the boots, they are much cheaper than a gym memebership and I’m personally much more likely to go for a walk outside than running on the treadmill. I decided to choose the Skechers Shape Ups Jump Start Pink Trainers and the Skechers Shape Ups Physique Boot for my Shape Up review.

I’m normally a size 7 but to review Skechers Shape Ups I went for a size 6 as other Skechers reviews and most of the feedback points out that they are very generous.

The Skechers Shape Ups Jump Start Pink Trainers are perfect for me as I love anything pink and I am happy to wear these on my nightly walk. But I don’t always have half an hour after work so the Physique Boots are a fashion led style which I can wear out and about meaning I could integrate my 30 minutes of walking into the day.

The first thing I noticed when I looked at them was the height of the sole, I was feeling slightly worried as I’m clumsy at the best of times so could foresee myself falling over...a lot!

As soon as I slipped my feet into the trainers and stood up my fears subsided, for those of you who have tried these will know you not only feel surprisingly stable but they are also so comfortable that I’m sure I heard my feet exhale a sigh of relief!

When I began walking, very slowly at first to pinpoint the exact workings, it felt very similar to walking on sand. The curved sole is where the magic happens and as I became more confident I could feel my calves working with every step. As you walk, your heels sink to the ground and the curved sole rolls your weight forward so you end up pushing off with your toes. Although it sounds complicated the shape of the sole means that is a subconscious effort and this is how the Skechers Shapes Ups work your muscles.

After the first week of my Shape Up review I had fallen into a routine of walking 30 minutes a day after work. Even on nights when I just wanted to fall into the couch the sight of my Skechers Shape Ups by the door was enough to get me motivated. On days when I couldn’t schedule in a walk I simply popped on the boots instead and was on my way!

So what’s my evaluation after a 6 week Shape Ups review? After 3 and a half weeks my jeans were starting to feel looser but the difference after the full 6 weeks is clear - my legs feel firmer than before and much stronger and I’m standing up straighter but more importantly my bottom has shrunk – a definite miracle! All of the Skechers reviews I have read only have positive things to say and after 6 weeks I can see why, for 30 minutes of walking the effects are amazing and the health benefits are brilliant! I now look forward to my evening walk and will continue walking my way to a fab body! (Well...one can hope!)

Gardening Clogs - My Top Picks

Spring is right around the corner and now that I can finally see my garden again I realise that it’s in need of some real TLC to get it ready for the summer, however as per usual the first question that comes to my mind is about footwear, specifically which gardening clogs should I opt for?

When gardening, I personally think that the best footwear is garden clogs, your feet feel free but your toes still get protection from the dirt (or rogue spades) and garden clogs are easy to slip on and off to stop you treading soil all over the house! However not everyone seems to notice when they leave a trail of muddy footprints... (ahem!)

Crocs have become exceptionally popular over recent years and seem to be the garden clogs of choice for many of the green fingered people I know. The Crocs Work Anti Static Fuse Clog is a brilliant choice as the thick Croslite sole on this garden clog and the closed heel and thicker upper across the metatarsal area help to protect the most sensitive areas. Crocs are also easy to clean, depending on which garden clog you choose you can wash them using soap and water or pop them in the washing machine. The circulation nubs on the footbed also massage your feet as your walk so you can have a pampering session alongside your pruning!
Alegria have some gardening clogs which are perfect for those Margot types (such as myself!) who love to look good whatever they’re doing! Alegria gardening clogs are available in some great colours and patterns so your feet can be as colourful as the flowers you’re growing while the thick outsole gives protection from repeatedly stepping on the spade while digging your flowerbeds. I’ll be opting for the Alegria Classic Butterfly Garden Clog as the butterfly print makes it very appropriate for spending time in the garden!
I often feel more achy after being in the garden than the gym thanks to all the walking and bending that’s involved but the rocker outsole on Alegria garden clogs lets you walk naturally and encourages a rolling movement which helps reduce pressure on the joints.

I’m a huge fan of the Fivefingers Speed and I love that with their sports laces they look like a hybrid of five finger shoes and a trainer making them more discreet than some of the other styles, this is perfect if you don’t want the questioning stares that are part and parcel of the Vibramfivefingers experience!
The Fivefingers Classic Shoe is where it all began and they are still loved for their simplistic style, the fact that they’re easy to pull on and off and because they are so quick drying. They are a firm favourite in my shoe collection and I’ve got my eye on the new Women’s Classic Lilac ones.

If you find the Fivefingers Classic Shoe too open then the Fivefingers Sprint is a great alternative. They still have a simple, open design but the hook and loop closure means they feel a bit more secure on your feet.

Reebok EasyTone Vs FitFlop - The Tone Off!!

It’s officially the first day of spring today! So warm afternoons, driving with the sunroof open and baring your legs are not too far away! If, when you think about baring your legs the excitement of summer turns to dread then you’re in desperate need of getting yourself a pair of toning shoes!

Reebok EasyTone and FitFlop are two of the most popular on the market today. But deciding which to choose can be tricky. That’s why I’ve put together a quick comparison on the two! I've done quite a few 'Vs' features before (Skechers and MBT) and they always generate alot of interest, so i thought this was a fitting comparison that hasn't been looked at before that will evoke plenty of differing opinions!

So which is best? Reebok EasyTone or FitFlop? I’ve put them both to the test and it is time for EasyTone vs FitFlop – the Tone off!! I put both to the test!

My Reebok EasyTone Review

I love these trainers! They look great (just like regular trainers) and they really do work! They don’t really take much getting used to, they felt a little strange for the first few steps but after that there was no problem! So, so comfy and they are ideal for wearing for loads of activities. I’ve worn mine in the gym, walking the dog and on shopping trips and my feet have never been happier. And neither have my calves, thighs and bum! After wearing them I can really feel the burn – even if I’ve only done a 30 minute brisk walk with the dog I feel like I’ve done a gruelling session at the gym! So I’m predicting the perfect bikini body in no time!

Reebok EasyTone come up a little bit big so it’s great that they come in half sizes too so you can really ensure you’re getting the perfect fit – so important if you want to wear them a lot.

Oh and they have a flip flop version too which I’ll be switching too when it’s hot!

FitFlop

FitFlop: The Technology

FitFlops are with the patent-pending microwobbleboard™ midsole technology - which loads your bottom and leg muscles more when you wear them- FitFlops give you a workout while you walk.

FitFlop: Clinical Evidence

Studies at the Centre for Human Performance at LSBU show that walking in FitFlops can increase leg, calf and gluteal muscle activity and improve muscle tone.

My FitFlop Review

These do look good and there is a great deal of hype around them but I was disappointed and didn’t really feel that they lived up to the hype. When wearing them I did feel them working my muscles more than in regular shoes but I didn’t find them as comfortable or as effective as the Reebok EasyTone. The balance pods in EasyTone really challenge your muscles to work harder and although I could feel the wobbleboard in the FitFlops in comparison to Reebok Easy Tone, there was no contest. The FitFlop toning effect isn’t within touching distance of EasyTone. Those Balance Pods are much more effective!

In terms of comfort, I was wearing a pair of the FitFlop boots and I found that my feet were slipping around in them a lot. I think the fact that FitFlops don’t come in half sizes lets them down a little. You need to wear toning shoes a lot to get the full benefits so finding the perfect fit is crucial. Instead I ended up having to settle for a pair which were too big.

Whilst it’s great that FitFlops come in styles such as boots and clogs which are stylish I’d much rather be wearing a trainer! With the Reebok EasyTone trainers you can wear them just about anywhere. I feel you’re more limited with the FitFlops and would need to spend a lot of money getting the boots, flip flops, clogs just so you can wear them as often as you’d need to make a difference!

I did hear that FitFlop are releasing a trainer soon though so I’ll keep an eye out for them, but they’re going to have to come up with something special to get EasyTone off my feet. Plus, if they don’t start doing half sizes I’m going to continually struggle with them!

Evaluation

In the battle of Reebok EasyTone vs FitFlops, I think it’s clear-cut…Reebok EasyTone is the winner! They’ve got fantastic scientific studies to back up their claims, they have toned me up and they are incredibly comfortable and versatile. Oh and Kelly Brook and Mel B wear them too so they must be doing something right!

Barefoot Running better for Joints

I love barefoot running, i really do believe that running barefoot helps me to move more freely and has resulted in a reduction of my aches and pains at the end of every run. I've been barefoot running since last year, when i discovered the Vibram FiveFingers - and it's been great! Anyway, i've spoken here loads of times about that so i won't bore you about me!

What i really wanted to bring to your attention is the study that has just been released on barefoot running which shows that it really is safer for the joints than wearing running shoes! So maybe this will put the skeptics minds at rest? Not yet? Ok, read on...

The study, published in the PM&R: The journal of injury, function and rehabilitation, looked at a group of 68 young adult runners who typically wear running shoes and got all subjects to run barefoot and in stability running footwear at a controlled running speed. They then assessed the results of the stress on the hip, knee, and ankle joints.

The study showed that running in trainers increased the stress on peoples joints more so than when barefoot running. There was an average of an astonishing 54% increase in the stress found on the hips and upto 38% more stress on different parts of the knees. Although the study didn't look at whether this would cause injuries i'm pretty sure that the results speak for themselves... if wearing running shoes puts that much more stress on your joints then its bound to lead to pain or even injuries in the long term.

That's why i'd recommend runners to try out some barefoot running. If you love running and want to lower your risk of injury, or are experiencing pain in your joints then barefoot running might just be for you! Theres loads of shoes you can buy that mimic the same sensation as barefoot running too - they all incorporate thin, slimline soles and are flexible enough to allow your feet to move in the same way as when barefoot... but with these you have that little bit of protection so to worry of stepping on unknown objects doesn't hold you back!

Beech Red Sandals - My mum's been interested in these sandals ever since I told her about their bunion busting properties! So this Christmas I'm treating her to a festive red pair! Crocs Work Anti-Static Fuse Navy Clog - I'm buying a pair of these for my best friend - she's a nurse and has struggled to find a pair of good shoes to wear for work for ages and after seeing her complaining so often of foot pain I knew I had to do something to help! She works on her feet for long hours and needs shoes that are comfortable, sturdy and protective which meets work place standards. They have a supportive arch and have nubs on the foot bed which massage the feet, giving her feet a well deserved pampering session throughout the day. Jinga Originals Black and White - Now I didn't have any trouble knowing what to get my friend Cécile for Christmas! Jinga trainers are the perfect gift: light colourful and very useful. Plus, because Cécile is different, Jingas are great because they are too! As a sports trainer, she runs around all day trying to get people back in shape and after that she runs back to get her child Bébidou from the nursery! For all those reasons she really needs footwear that will fit in with her busy lifestyle! So, Jingas will be great because they're so light weight she won't know she has them on! Earth Clinton Black - My other mission for Christmas was to find a pair of boots for my partner who was really starting to freeze in his trainers. Not that he complains everyday when he comes back from work…..! Now I’ve loved Reebok Easy Tone right from the start but recently they've been getting a lot of media spotlight... not only for their controversial TV advertisement but for their fantastic benefits!

Yesterday I came across an article in one of the biggest publications in the world - The New York Times - that was completely dedicated to the Reebok Easy Tone Shoes! The article, written by Tara Parker-Pope, simply asked the question - can you give your muscles a better workout simply by changing your shoes? And the conclusion, after looking at Reebok Easy Tone in depth, was a resounding yes!

Reebok recently joined in the toning shoe revolution after brands like MBT became popular... but MBT's styles leave something to be desired. The article in the New York Times looked into this evidence with a study that was conducted by Reebok at the University of Delaware. It's been reported today that Victoria Beckham is to have emergency surgery on her feet to remove her horrifying bunions!

It appears that those sky scraper heels Victoria Beckham is constantly pictured wearing, however lovely and expensive they may be have wreaked some serious havoc to her feet! Those poor toes! And she's still pictured squeezing them into killer heels, despite the fact that they must be rubbing on those huge bunions... that's really got to hurt!

If i could get in touch with Mrs Beckham i'd give her a pair of our Beech Sandals - they include toe separators which spread the toes out and realign the bones in the feet to help alleviate bunions. Running Barefoot – Do You Dare to Run Bare?!

A new controversial argument has come into play within the running community, should you dare to run bare? Barefoot that is!

Having read plenty of blogs on barefooting and now barefoot running there is definately an increasing number of runners out there who believe that running barefoot is best.

Now, I’ve always believed that running trainers should be shock absorbing to protect the joints. After all, how many years have been spent researching and designing shock absorbing soles and features include air bubbles to spring loaded soles? Surely this can’t have just been an advertising ploy?!

Perhaps these barefoot runners keep to soft surfaces such as grass and sand? Actually they don’t, a lot of them run on the hard surfaces which even shodden runners are warned to avoid such as concrete and tarmac.

I’ve recently read a blog by a podiatrist (who better!) arguing the pros and cons of running barefoot, here’s what he had to say...

He said that running barefoot actually goes against all of his training as shoes help to cushion the shock when running, however when running barefoot the heightened sensation teaches you to take lighter steps and allows you to land softly. Barefoot enthusiasts also swear that running barefoot increases stability and actually results in less injuries.

The podiatrist did concede that if you want to run barefoot then do so in moderation and build up your stamina first, he even states that Fivefinger shoes are a great way to experience the barefoot sensation and build up resistance. All you need to do is start off slowly, wearing them for short bursts, just until you get used to them.

For me, the one major road block to running barefoot was hygiene and safety, I just wasn’t prepared to run around Manchester completely barefoot! So, instead I was willing to try running in barefoot shoes for that extra bit of protection.

According to new research, yesterday was the day when 6 out of 10 women will have embarked on a regime to get fit and lose weight in time to fit into their Christmas party dresses. For me, it’s nearly right… I started my Christmas diet last week, so far no luck but I will keep going!

According to new research published by the Arthritis Care and Research Journal, people with Arthritis should consider taking up Tai Chi.

Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art which is generally practised for a variety of health reasons and involves making slow rhythmic movements.

The research from the Arthritis Care and Research Journal showed that Tai Chi helps to sooth pain in those suffering from arthritis in the knees, a painful condition which troubles thousands of Brits.

“Given its low impact and evidence that it tends to increase muscle strength and balance and give general pain relief, we think it’s a worthwhile option for arthritis patients” says Dr. William L. Haskell, deputy director of the Stanford University Center for Research in Disease Prevention in California.

Alegria Classic Red Plaid Clog - I hold my hands up! I love this plaid printed clog and I had to fight against Laura and Glen for this in the buying meeting! I think tartan/plaid is a print that never goes out of fashion- it makes a come back each season whether it's in a coat, scarf or even tights!

I wear a lot of black (don’t ask me why – maybe because I get dressed in the dark!), so to add a touch of colour to my mono black work wear, these clogs are brill! I was actually surprised at how 'non-clompy' they look and feel and the ease at which you can slip them on. The foot bed is really dreamy and soft too! This style proves that there is a shoe that is fun, stylish and actually good for you without you feeling like a wally! Oh, and they have this really nice metallic finish!

Earth In fuse Boot - I have never really done ‘practical’ before but for this Winter I decided to ditch the faddy (quite cheap) boots from the high street and invest in a 'proper' pair. Last season I admired the Lodge Beaver from afar but this time, the Infuse was the boot choice for me! It's not bulky, it's not dated, the leather is REALLY nice and they are robust! With two big dogs and a husband ;-) I like to enjoy a good walk to give the dogs (and the husband!) a good run around. Infuse mean that rather than getting cold and wet feet, I’m the complete opposite! They are absolutely super!

Tonewalker Khaki - These are amazing and I do actually swear by them! I hate the gym, love swimming (but there’s always something better on the TV) and calorie controlled diets are practised 0 days out of 7! So apart from the dog walking, I admit, I am pretty poor at overall exercise. This time last year, my pre-wedding fat panic set in and with date fast approaching I had to try something! Tonewalkers have received such rave reviews from customers that I wanted a piece of the action so every night for 6 weeks I wore my Tonewalkers around the house. I would pop them on whilst making tea, doing a spot of cleaning, even when dying my hair. I would get up the morning after and really feel my muscles ache (in a good way) and be thrilled that I could feel them work! After the 6 weeks, I lost around 2 inches of my bum and legs and I swear my stomach was tighter! They look weird, but trust me they are fantastic!

I have to recommend two pairs of Earth just because you’ll rarely see me out of them! First off I love the Earth Solar Mahogany Mary Jane shoe. I’ve ben a major fan of Solar, it has been our best selling shoe 4 seasons in a row! I think it is because it is subtle but stylish, you can make it look smart for work or casual for the weekends, and the new tapered toe, adds a little bit more elegance to the style! The Negative Heel is the best. When I'm not wearing them, I am completely aware of how I should be standing and walking so a big thumbs up from me!

My second favourite pair of Earth is Lodge 2 Caribou – these are just heaven sent! I have had trouble with lower back pain for about 10 years (my Doctor told me that it's more than likely something to do with the way I was slouching) but wearing Earth every day makes the pain disappear as they help me stand up straight, plus the Thinsulate lining keeps my toes toasty warm… now that's what I call a no-brainer.

As you will have seen, our fab Dancing brand Freddy supplied all the footwear for the movie Fame so I was, of course, the first to get a pair of the silver Freddy 4Pro Dancers. They have completely separate pods underneath the shoe, one for the heel and one for the ball of your foot so allow your feet to bend in a more natural way. Now, I'm a shopper not a dancer, so I wasn't sure if they would fit my chosen hobby, but the first time I wore them was for a stamina testing shopping trip with my friend while she was looking for a perfect dinner party outfit. The shoes moved with my feet and were so light that I was almost doing Fame style dance leaps from shop to shop. OK so ‘almost’ was is lie… I did leap at one point to demonstrate the technology & flexibility of the trainers but was subsequently told off because I wasn't taking the shopping trip seriously enough!! Don't worry, we are still friends but I still won't shop in anything else!

Vivo Barefoot Odette Print - I was originally attracted to these because they looked subtle but interesting at the same time – perfect for wearing with jeans. When I first slipped them on my feet were in heaven, they are so lightweight and comfy I literally feel like I’m walking barefoot. I wear them everywhere…. Shopping, driving… I’m even wearing them right now! They allow me to stay on my feet all day long without any pain and my feet definitely feel more flexible.

Earth Lodge 2 Beaver Boots - Once the Autumn draws in I literally live for boots and just knew I had to get a pair of these from the moment I saw them! Just like Susie, I wasn’t disappointed! They are so snuggly and warm and keep my toes toasty, even in the freezing Manchester weather! I also love the feeling of the Negative Heel Technology, when I’m wearing them I can be safe in the knowledge that I’m correcting my posture and toning my bum and legs (so I don’t feel too guilty when I don’t go to the gym or when I tuck into one of the many chocolate treats which have a permanent place in the office!). And, what’s even better is that unlike other ‘toning footwear’ nobody has to know that I’m actually cheating a little bit to tone up as they just look like regular winter boots! But I guess my secrets out now…

CocoR ose Red Gem Shoe - For someone like me who is completely incapable of lasting a whole day or night in high heels CocoRose are absolute life savers! Like most women I love putting on a pair of high heels but generally within a couple of hours the pain becomes too much to bare and it generally ends up ruining me. Now I have my lovely gem stone CocoRose folding shoes I just pull them out of my handbag and slip them on in place of my heels. They let my feet and calves stretch out and allow me to carry on without any worries about my feet! I get loads of comments on them and the bag which I can put my heels into is a great idea! Oh, and they are great for driving too!

I love the Vivo Barefoot Woman's Yukam Pink Shoe. I think they are a fab pair of shoes and a brilliant fuscia pink colour! The first time I put them on was so I could test them around the office and they were so comfortable I had to buy them! They are really flexible and once you have them on you can understand why they are called barefoot shoes! The colour makes them really fashionable and they can be worn with jeans or skirts, I wear my pair all the time so the cost per wear makes them a real bargain!!

Beech Sandals have really taken off this year – it all went crazy when they were rated 10/10 in the Daily Mail by a Podiatrist! I started on the team just after that amazing review and the first thing a got was a pair of Beech in Black – they’re so simple but SOOO effective, you’ll wonder how you lived with out them. If you want to improve your balance, train your toes to be poker straight and increase all over foot health, you have to invest in Beech!

The Softwaves Sofia Taupe Shoes are nice casual flats. They are really comfortable but they feel a bit strange the first time you put them on because the waves on the sole massage your feet as you walk which is a brilliant way to pamper your feet once you get used to them! The waves also circulate air so they keep your feet cool all day long so they’re great when I’m spending the day shopping!

I think Softwaves Elena Boots are one of the best boots we sell. It is easy to dress up or down which is good for me because I like to keep things simple! I leave the glitz and sparkly stuff to Glen and Sarah! The pictures don’t do this boot justice because the leather upper is so soft and wears really well. I can see it being one of those boots that I have for years and years because the older it gets the better the leather looks! Like Helen points out, the wave massage insole feels different – it definitely isn’t a gimmick! You can really feel it working on your feet and after a day running around like a headless chicken it is just great to have feet that are still alive in these babies!

You can’t say a bad word about Earth in my opinion! My Earth collection now stands a 10 pairs! (and my bank balance has the scars to prove it!). This season, my favourites are Tone the little black shoe. These are really classic in their styling but they look so current when you have them on. They can make even the biggest of feet look ‘cute’ and are officially the comfiest shoes I have ever had on my feet! Negative Heel technology is my calorie burning best friend and like Rebecca says – no one else knows I’m working out while I walk!

We’ve only just got them in, but Simple Satire Hornensia pumps are the most fun sneakers I own! I find that when its winter it is easy to get a bit glum about things – let’s face it, it is always dark! But I wore these fun and bright sneakers yesterday with a matching purple belt and some old jeans and I was like my own ray of sunshine! I love the colour and love the fact they they’re fully recycled and for shoes that are made from tyres, bottle tops and re-formed cardboard, these are durable, comfortable and classy! Something this colourful should be in everyone’s winter wardrobe – it is like a rebellion against the winter darkness!

Rockport Men’s Abraim - These shoes are lightweight, smart, excellent quality leather and the soles make you feel like you are wearing trainers. They were comfortable from the first time I put them on (really!), and they get even better the more you wear them. The sole is really unique for a formal shoe, its shock absorbing, and they look really stylish.

Earth Gulf Sandal - These sandals are the most comfortable I’ve ever worn, the padding means you can walk miles in them without needing an ambulance. The suede material on the sole gives a quality feel. I only really wear Earth shoes since I’m used to the benefits and any normal brand of shoe feels weird.

Vivo Barefoot Men's Lesotho Brown Shoe - These shoes feel like trainers but look smart enough to wear for work. The leather is good quality and so soft! I took my normal size which fit perfectly. The Barefooting school of thought really makes sense to me, they just feel ‘right’ when you wear, which is saying something considering you’d be hard pushed to see me in anything else but Earth!

How to Reduce the Number of Diabetes Cases

Whilst doing my daily check of what’s new in the world of health research, studies and news I came across an article in the Daily Express on Diabetes that took my eye.

New figures have just been releases from GP Practice Data which shows that Diabetes cases have shot up by 145,500 in just one year. Meaning that there are now more than 2.6 million Brits who have been diagnosed with Diabetes.

Diabetes is often linked to obesity and being overweight so its important to start looking into ways to lose weight to in the long run hopefully make this number of Diabetes sufferers begin to decrease!

Obviously it’s important to follow a healthy balanced diet and to lead a more active lifestyle. But for those of you like me who spend the majority of their time sat in an office and with little time for the gym it might be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Well… I’ve mentioned plenty of times before my love for weight loss shoes and incorporating a fitness plan into your every day routine.

For me, the best way to achieve better levels of fitness and higher levels of weight loss in what limited time you do have is by wearing your weight loss shoes (my favourites are Earth as you can wear styles suitable for the office, are really comfy and burn 4 times more body fat than regular shoes) daily to work. Then every day, just make sure you spend at least 30 minutes brisk walking whilst wearing them… so this could be your commute to or from work, a daily lunch time walk or a dash around the supermarket!

There’s been quite a lot in the press recently that I’ve been reading about the dangers of killer high heels and today’s no different with an article in The Telegraph showing that healthy footwear is really the way to go if you’re worried about developing Arthritis later in life…

According to the article, in a study carried out on behalf of the American College of Rheumatology, high heels were found to be one of the biggest causes of future joint problems such as Arthritis. Amongst women, the scientists identified a connection between ‘poor shoe choices’ (e.g. high heels) and arthritis.

The scientists advised that young women need to start making careful choices regarding their footwear if they want to avoid arthritis.

This is what we’ve been saying for years, and why we’ve always promoted choosing healthy shoes which not only look great but won’t leave you with arthritis later in life! In particular I’d recommend going for Earth shoes… these take pressure off your joints such as the knees to both alleviate pain from arthritis and to avoid suffering with arthritis later in life.

Shoe Boots are Killing Our Feet!

This morning I was reading an article from the serial moaner Liz Jones from the Daily Mail… now usually I’m not a fan of her rants and complaints but I actually think that this time she’s hit the nail on the head.

Today it’s the turn of shoe boots with killer heels – and the designers and wearers of these dangers are sure to feel the pain after reading her words of wisdom (if they aren’t already after the pain of their towering shoes)!

This latest trend of shoe boots is big on trendsetters such as Alexa Chung and various celebrities have been spotted hobbling and squirming during the recent London Fashion Week whilst wearing them. Apparently one magazine editor was heard complaining ‘I don’t know that I can make it to the Burberry show. My feet are killing me!’

Now however beautiful these shoe boots may be… there is no denying how damaging they can be!

Apparently, a McTimoney Chiropractor stated that they see "Five or six women a day with lower back problems that would directly attribute to these shoes. They place great strain on the lower back and knees, and of course they can cause strained ankles."

This, along with the news I’ve previously written about women buying the wrong size shoes just to keep up with the latest trends and we have a horrible concoction of back pain, bunions, blisters and sprained ankles.

Now I’m not telling anyone to abort sky high shoe boots immediately (I don’t want to get put in the same predicament as the TUC last week!). All I am asking is for the love of god THINK before you slip into them! ‘Are they really going to carry me around the supermarket pain free?’ or ‘Can I spend the night dancing or will I end up curled up in the corner nursing my blistered feet?’

If you don’t have the best of responses to these questions then maybe you’re better off slipping into a pair of comfy, stylish flats (or at least something with a heel that doesn’t give you vertigo!). Save your shoe boots for a night when the maximum number of steps you need to walk is from the car door to your seat in that swanky restaurant where you can show them off to your fellow diners with a big smug pain free smile on your face!

The first thing I’m really excited to tell you about is... Skechers have made Shape Up Boots!! So you can Shape Up while you walk in 'Ugg' type Suede fur lined cosies, in calf high, faux fur trimmed toggle boots (think Earth Lodge) and some super faux fur lined ankle boots which will go great with jeans.

When will they be here?

High Heel Ban in the Workplace 2!

Well... the debate on the TUC High Heels Motion has conjured up quite a stir! And it seems that the press have got it all a little bit wrong... i've actually just spoken to podiatrist Lorraine Jones who said she loves high heels as well but for the right occasion "TUC High Heels Motion 81 is about choice NOT a ban. Choose to wear high heels or have the choice not to. How simple is that!" A woman after our own heart... we couldn't agree more!

High Heels are great for certain occasions but there are other occasions when you want and need to just slip into something a little comfier and less damaging to your feet!!

I've heard some stories about women who have been made to wear high heels to work... why i ask! As i said below, every woman has the right to wear her heels, but in the same breath every woman has the right NOT to wear her heels aswell!

High Heel Ban in the Workplace

Yesterday it was announced that the Trade Union Congress has backed a motion which criticised high heels as a sexist health and safety hazard. The leaders of the Union have insisted that female workers should instead sport ‘sensible shoes’ instead of high heels to avoid injuries and long term foot and back pain and problems.

Lorraine Jones from the Society of Chriropodists and Podiatrists claims that ‘Two million working days are lost every year through lower-limb and foot related problems’

Since the meeting of the Trade Union Congress yesterday in Liverpool there’s been huge talk about the unions plan to stamp out high heels in the workplace… with varying opinions.

So what do you think about this? I know I always rant on about how high heels are bad for you but isn’t it every woman’s right to wear a pair of heels if she likes? Or do you think that the Trade Union Congress’s argument is completely just and that high heels can only lead you down a path of pain, medical bills and days off work?

Well whatever your response is to this, no one can deny that it’s nice to slip into a lovely pair of shoes that not only look and feel great. Earth Boots Vs FitFlop Boots

With the crisp Autumn mornings and the dark evenings approaching we often let our health and fitness routines slip. It is much more tempting to rush home for a hot cup of tea and a bar of chocolate instead of bombing to the gym for a hot and sweaty workout.

But, as I’ve read before, September is the best time to kick start your health and weight loss routine, and with an array of new fitness boots available, this autumn/winter when you opt for comfort and warmth you won’t have to sacrifice exercise and fitness, because these boots offer both!

Now it’s all about which ones to pick… the big hitters in this league are Earth Boots (renowned for their posture improving Negative Heel Technology and proven calorie burning styles) or FitFlop Boots (‘the boots with the gym built in’). Well, I’m here to run a bit of a comparison on the two… lets see what I found out…..

The Technologies

Earth feature Negative Heel Technology which is a slight incline of 3.7 degrees in the sole of the shoes which works much like turning up the incline on a treadmill. This incline promotes a better posture and more natural gait. This relieves pressure off the joints and alleviates back pain. A recent clinical study into Earth Footwear proved that by wearing Earth you can burn 4 times more body fat than conventional shoes, actively recruit more leg muscles and enhance aerobic capabilities and endurance (so you can run faster and further, quicker!!).

FitFlop are known as the flip flops with the gym built in and they have also released a range of boots with the same technology. The FitFlop wobble board technology is engineered to help tone and tighten your leg muscles by creating instability in your feet as you walk. A study has proven that FitFlop improve muscle tone and increase leg, calf and gluteal muscle activity.

The Comfort

I’ve tried on both of these and I have to say that in terms of comfort I prefer the Earth boots. They are so snugly and warm and they leave plenty of space for my toes to wriggle! Their moulded foot bed and anatomic arch support keep my feet free from fatigue and reduces shock impact on my feet. Earth’s technology isn’t harsh, whereas the FitFlop boots were constantly making me feel unsteady and they didn’t have the same arch support and orthotically moulded foot bed as the Earth boots.

The Styling

I know to some the styling of their ‘healthy shoes’ isn’t really an issue but to me it is! One of the major reasons for buying these boots is to tone up and lose weight so I can feel comfortable and walk down the street with my head held high… you can’t really do this in a pair of ugly boots which look ridiculous so style is important!

To be honest neither of the boots are at all offensive, but I do have to say that the FitFlops look a little like a pair of slipper boots I had a couple of years ago rather than a trendy pair of boots I can stroll around the shops in! The Earth boots look great with tights or with my skinny jeans tucked inside and I love the toggles (which are really on trend!).

The Result

Ding Dong! Well at the end of the clash I have to say that Earth is my fave! The Earth Lodge boots are gorgeous and comfy and I just think that the research that has been done into the fat burning effects and health benefits really outshines that of FitFlops. FitFlops are quite a good choice if it’s just something you want to wear around the house but for all day, comfort, calorie burn and style I’d definitely go for Earth! (Oh… and they do wellies too so you can even go out in the damp British weather in Earth!)
